In 1963 he decided he wanted a more outdoor life. So, after selling his half of the design business to his partner, he and his wife purchased some waterfront property and started a marina on Maryland`s Eastern Shore.
In the process of developing the marina into one of the largest on the Chesapeake Bay, he became a Coast Guard licensed captain in both sail and power and coincidently became known for his paintings of Chesapeake Bay work boats. Gradually his painting avocation overtook his multiple vocations.
